Is A Healthy Colon The Foundation Of Wellness?As well as with colom cleansing, there is a raging debate about constipation. Is it harmful to your health to be constipated, and what is constipation anyway?
Strange as it may sound, it isn't so easy to define constipation. What exactly is it? Well I suppose that it could be defined as the inability to have a bowel movement when one normally occurs, or is desired. But the problem with this is that it varies enormously from person to person.
What is a "normal" bowel movement? How often is a "normal" bowel movement? How often should it occur? There are no clear answers to these questions and even the experts disagree. I am no expert and certainly won't buy into the debate except to point out the difficulties with the question.
For one person a "normal" bowel movement might be daily. For another it might be twice a day and for another it may be twice a week. There is no normal and no agreed perfect frequency.
And even then the frequency of each individual may vary enormously depending on their diet. I know that from my experience. A change of diet and what was normal quickly becomes a thing of the past.
And then there is the next question. Ignoring the frequency issue, is it harmful to your body to be constipated?
Again there is general disagreement. I have listened to a bowel specialist interviewed on radio who maintained, (to my surprise) that for some a normal bowel movement was once a week and that was fine. No problem there.
Well I have to confess to having some surprise hearing that. I had expected that once a week was just not on from a health point of view, but that didn't bother him at all.
So whether or not a lower frequency, or for some what would be constipation, is harmful, either in the long or short term, is difficult to say.
However purely from a laymans point of view I would have to say that I incline towards believing that infrequent bowel movements over an extended period of time aren't the ideal scenario. Personally I make an effort to eat a higher amount of fiber than I would if I didn't care about it, and to drink more water. And it makes a difference.
So this website isn't here to tell you whether you are constipated or not, or what constipation is even. Just to offer you a range of views about this interesting subject. There are a whole host of people out there with a range of views about constipation and many of them have written interesting articles on the subject. This website compiles as many of them as I can find for your enjoyment.
It may be the only place on the net where you can find a whole range of different views on constipation all represented in one place. It's certainly the only one I know of.
